In my opinion, every new technology / idea / methodology/ dogma /... must be useful and easy to use, to be accepted by users. When we think about SOA - it is useful no doubt, but current implementations by large vendors are far from being easy to use. style="font-style: italic;">What do document management and BPM have in common? Well, except of technical aspets, almost everything. Document management and safe storage is not technicl problem at all, it is a 'process and organization problem'. We can have excellent storage system, Lampertz cell, no SPOF (Single point of failure), HA (High availability) system, but if we do not have well defined process and well defined responsibilities, what's the use of it?
The article describes multi-layer design of safe storage of digital documents: from hardware to business processes. It is also usefull as communication tool/language for internal work rules in organization. It is far more understandable for employees to have one A4 sheet of process model (in BPMN) sticked at their workplace as a pile of documentation.
Some time ago, we implemented new CRM process (work rules) for sales dept. and software solution (Microsoft Dynamics CRM). Microsoft Dynamics CRM is a framework, not out-of-the box solution. It can be frustrating for non-IT users, when they see all of the functionalities of the this tool. Moreover, the workflow is not defined out-of-the-box. Therefore, conceptual model of the workflow is needed. We created BPMN model of the CRM process before we started to tinker with CRM system. This idea proved successful, because we argued over the process model, not the tool, and spared some of the precious time of our programmers and CRM specialists. They've got well polished idea in a form of process model and the implementation and configuration of the Microsoft CRM went flawlessly.
If I sum it up: do BPM before CRM!

Finished BPM project...

November was a though month. It concentrates on the process model interoperability and portability problems, caused because of huge number of process modeling standards, which often do not even target the same conceptual level of process

modeling. It provides an idea how to bring together those standards, using process concepts mapping into Petri nets and incorporating the usage of process patterns. Transformation to strictly formal process languages has a potential to prove itself as a fair solution with the following advantages: the number of mappings among different process languages is reduced and the process model can be analyzed using proven Petri Net or general graph algorithms. Development of the approach is still in its early phase. Mapping rules tofrom process patterns are neither strictly defined nor trivial.
